Are you looking for ways to capture, share and put to good use your inspirational ideas and enthusiasm for developing sustainable energy solutions?

Are you keen to make contact with people and communities who are also interested in renewable and sustainable energy use in isolated locations, particularly in the Nordic region?

Want access to a range of skills and experiences related to evaluating, designing, financing, or implementing sustainable energy solutions?

Then consider joining the community-focused, NordSESIL network.

Email us at NordSESIL @ Risoe.dk for further information.

Rising costs for fossil fuel energy supplies and a desire to reduce local and global impacts from fossil fuel use are prompting communities around the world to consider alternative methods of meeting their energy needs.

A need to adapt to changes that affect our communities, such as climate variation or increased energy use, have also stirred interest in creating alternative methods of meeting energy demands than dependence on fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas.

Communities in isolated parts of the world are particularly challenged in using conventional fuels such as these, with long distances and limited resources and services becoming additional barriers when trying to maintain cost-effective, reliable and sustainable energy services in areas that are more remote, and perhaps a little tougher, than most.

The significant global investment in more sustainable energy generation, supply and management technologies has created a wide range of options for communities to consider as alternatives to fossil fuels.

Unfortunately, many small (and not so small) communities do not have the skills and resources to understand how such developments relate to their energy demands, and more importantly - how they can evaluate and access such solutions.

Map of the Nordic region and the NordSESIL.net project logo. The NordSESIL network will improve the capability of energy-using communities in isolated areas of the Nordic region to access sustainable energy solutions by creating and stimulating a network of relevant and motivated stakeholders.

The network will provide a framework for communication and knowledge sharing and become a forum for motivated participants who want to find and access relevant partners and the knowledge and skills required to 'get sustainable energy projects happening' in isolated areas of the Nordic region.

The NordSESIL network is a 3-year project financed by
Nordic Energy Research, and is hosted by the UNEP Risoe Centre for Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development at the Danish Technical University in Denmark. Existing and invited members of the network include energy using communities, local, national and regional government authorities, research institutions, education providers, technology developers, and Nordic and international industry partners.

The project began recently in September 2007. The timing and goals of the project make the network an ideal method for capturing and enhancing the progress made with recent conferences focusing on Arctic and Nordic energy issues, such as the “
Energy from the Edge Symposium” (Shetland Islands, September 2007) and the IPY “Arctic Energy Summit Technology Conference”, Alaska, October 2007.

Your contributions to or use of the network are enthusiastically encouraged!
Contact David Pointing (Network Coordinator) to find out more and please, register your interest today so we can keep you informed of developments to the network and the site.

Specific details about the broad goals, approach to developing the network, and expected participants are available
here.

Your can also read a recent article about the network in the Risø News magazine (pg 18,
